Honoring a Life of Compassionate Service

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Dr. Michael Yoong, a dedicated leader, and tireless advocate for palliative care in Malaysia.

Dr. Yoong first joined Hospis Malaysia in the year 2000. In 2005, he began volunteering with Hospice Klang, offering his time, expertise, and empathy to patients and families in need. In 2008, he took on the role of Chairperson of Hospice Klang — a position he held with full commitment for 15 years. Under his guidance, the organization grew in strength, continuing its mission of providing comfort, dignity, and support to those facing life-limiting illnesses. As the chairperson, he facilitated the growth of Hospice Klang that is now standing proud with their new centre. He helped expand the services to more areas in Klang so more patients get the access that was very much needed. His strong passion in advocacy was palpable in multiple articles and awareness videos on mainstream and electronic media nationwide.

His vision extended beyond Klang. Dr. Yoong was instrumental and a vocal member of the Malaysian Hospice Council, now known as the Malaysian Hospice and Palliative Care Council (MHPCC). Through his efforts, he helped lay the foundation for a more coordinated and compassionate approach to palliative care nationwide.

Dr. Yoong will be remembered not only for his leadership and advocacy but also for his humility, kindness, and quiet strength. He gave so much of himself to ensure that others would not have to face the end of life alone or in pain.

His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, the systems he helped build, and the values he championed. We are profoundly grateful for his service, and he will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
